Supported file formats and codecs

With KLASH, you can upload and create download links for any type of file. The below list is the types of files that can be viewed and played on KLASH. Recommended browsers are Google Chrome on Mac, and Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on Windows.

HDR

KLASH supports regular HDR files, as long as you are viewing the files on a monitor that supports it. HDR10 and HDR10+ are not supported.

Processing times

The main impact of longer processing times is the size of the file and the bitrate. Low bitrates process faster while high bitrates can take longer to process. MOV ProRes can have high bitrates, and take a long time to process because of it.

The recommendation is to keep bitrates low, around 10 Mbit, to ensure both a good viewing experience when viewing the original file, and the speed of transcoding the original file into proxies.

Supported input container and file formats (file extensions)

KLASH supports the following file formats and codes:

  • FLV (with H.264 and AAC codecs) (.flv)

  • MXF (.mxf)

  • GXF (.gxf)

  • MPEG2-PS, MPEG2-TS, 3GP (.ts, .ps, .3gp, .3gpp, .mpg)

  • Windows Media Video (WMV)/ASF (.wmv, .asf)

  • AVI (Uncompressed 8bit/10bit) (.avi)

  • MP4 (.mp4, .m4a, .m4v) with Fast Track¹

  • ISMV (.isma, .ismv)

  • Microsoft Digital Video Recording(DVR-MS) (.dvr-ms)

  • Matroska/WebM (.mkv)

  • WAVE/WAV (.wav)

  • QuickTime (.mov) with Timecode²

  • Images (.png, .jpeg/.jpg, .webp, .psd, .tiff)

  • SVG (.svg)

  • GIF (.gif)

  • PDF (.pdf)

  • GLB (.glb)

  • Text (.txt)

Not supported

The following file formats and codecs are not supported:

  • Lagarith Lossless Video Codec

  • OBJ, FBX (.obj, .fbx)

  • HDR10 & HDR10+

Note: The format and codec on your original file will not matter if the viewer is viewing a proxy that KLASH generated for you.

¹ Fast Track indicates that the video file will be playable immediately after upload. No transcoding is necessary. However, KLASH can still transcode the video to multiple proxies in the form of SD and HD to improve the viewing experience on varying bandwidths.

² When using the SMPTE timecode format in the studio on KLASH, timecode support indicates that the file’s SMPTE timecode TC_IN and TC_OUT will be read and automatically applied.
