Labels and metadata
Labels and metadata can help you organize your files and simplify searches. They can be added manually or imported from XML files.
Manually adding labels and metadata
Add labels and metadata manually by the following steps:
Select your file. You can select multiple files by marking an area with the files, or holding down Command on Mac or Shift on Windows when selecting the files.
To create a new label, write the name of the label and click Enter. You can add metadata to the label, e.g., label 'City', and metadata 'Stockholm'.
Importing metadata from Avid and Silverstack
On KLASH, you can import your metadata from an Avid ALE (Avid Log Exchange) file or a Silverstack XML.
The file import guide tells you which metadata will be linked to which video file on KLASH when importing the metadata. It tries to match by the following:
File names excluding local file paths and file extensions.
Tape name embedded in the video together with a timecode embedded as a tag, timecode track, or EXIF data.
If any of the above match, the video file is populated with the metadata.
Here is an example Silverstack XML for importing your metadata into KLASH: metadata_to_klash_example. With Avid ALE files, you need to add 'klash_asset' as a column for KLASH to match the files to the metadata. KLASH looks for the columns 'filepath' and 'klash_asset'. The 'klash_asset' metadata is intended only for use when the 'filepath' can't be matched to the file names uploaded to KLASH.
Follow these steps to import your metadata into KLASH:
Upload the metadata file into the project where your video files are located.
Right-click on the metadata file, and click Import as metadata. This will bring up a new window that shows all the video files that have imported metadata.
Close the window and select a file. Now you will see the imported metadata for that file in the Details panel.
Note: You need to create a team and then a project within that team to be able to import metadata from a metadata file to the project. Teams are part of the paid plans on KLASH (Pro, Team, and Enterprise). Learn more about Team and project management.
Search and filter on labels and metadata
With the labels and metadata in place, you will be able to search and filter them:
Navigate to the left side menu and click Search.
Click Filter and then Labels or Metadata.
Project-pinned metadata
With project-pinned metadata, you can control what metadata to show on card items in the file overview and as overlays in the player. Pin metadata by the following steps:
Navigate to the project where you want to pin metadata, and click Settings.
Navigate to the bottom of the page under the Details tab.
Click on the input field under Labels & Metadata, and select the metadata you want to pin from the dropdown menu.
Company-pinned labels
Company-pinned labels will be shown as search filters in the company's global search feature to simplify company-wide searches. The Filter feature will still be available for advanced searches.
Add company-pinned labels by the following steps:
Navigate to your company workspace, and click Settings in the dropdown menu.

Navigate to the bottom of the page under the Details tab.
Click on the input field under Labels & Metadata, and select the metadata you want to pin from the dropdown menu.
Note: You can only pin metadata that you've already created. The input field under Labels & Metadata will be empty until you've either imported metadata or manually added metadata the first time. Company-pinned labels require you to be on the Enterprise plan.
